Judges’ comments for the category

First place: Good variety of photos, both in content and technique. Judges wanted to see the emotion involved in serving on a carrier.

Second place: Good coverage of a natural disaster, its cleanup and effect. A variety of locations and individuals were shown in the coverage. A greater selection of focal lengths and more of the emotions from those affected by the flood would have moved this up in the standings.

Third place: Nice story. We liked how the photographer showed the disabled players receiving the help from their abled partners. Too many shots at the same focal length and similar shaped crops. A tighter edit... the hug is a good ender without the shaved ice, the boy picking up the ball and with the snack do not help to move the story forward.

HM: The "New Face" story is the start of what could be a very powerful piece. This looks like a onetime visit with the subjects. We really want the photographer to go back and spend more time with the young woman. These few images only show her at home with her husband. What she has to deal with in her life outside her home would make for a more complete story.
