Asbury United Methodist Church ministry director Joe Reeder drives Aramis and Rayna Manriquez, in yellow, to a cooking class at the Maxey Community Center. Reeder uses money from his federal income tax return and social security check to enroll children who attend the church in classes at the center. He also picks them up and drives them to the classes. The children at the church call him "Grandpa" Joe because of all he does for them, weather picking them up for class, or playing in the park afterward or even going out for ice cream before taking them back home Reeder fulfills a grandfatherly role many of these children might not have otherwise.

Judges’ comments for the category

The essays that stood out against the others were more effective at giving a sense of storytelling. American Idol provided a nice variety of story, humor and moments. The stadium essay was the only essay with a sense of narrative progression and many images were well shot. Grandpa Joe was the only essay with a personal connection, but all the images were very similar.
